I’ve just noticed that after several years passed, my subconscious judgment was still the same. Although in 2004 there was >> an incident << which made me decide to not prejudge people from their angry reaction, I had forgotten about it, and resorted to this rant in my personal blog. Ah, well, I wasn’t totally angry at the person in this blog entry though. More like confused and wanted to know what on earth had caused him to do that to me. So, well, deeply somewhere in my mind I was thinking he might, after all, had a valid reason.

Reading that thread I recall this old feeling…. It really reflects the new one. I wrote “My distress wasn’t going directly to him, but more to why he had a negative assumption towards me.” and that statement is true in this new incident too.

—————————–

Hmm…. I have a category called “FFXI Friends” and now I wish I had made something like “FFXI Foes.” LOL, no, it’s not that I met an arch enemy or what, it’s just some weirdo who was openly hostile towards me at a farm. Well, I and Lu, along with my bro were farming a kind of hide for leathercraft’s merchandise (ooh I picked a fancy word!) Well, my goal was to sell the leather, though I’m main Cooking, not Tanning.

The reason why I picked this leather was that a few days ago I and Lusi went through a series of Quests in Wings of the Goddess areas and finally got the reward; ingredients for the later Gobbie Bags. However, when we returned to Jeuno, we found out that no one was selling the leather we still needed!

I looked at the price history as well as how fast the leather was sold, and I knew that at that rate if we don’t seriously camp the Auction House, I wouldn’t be able to buy any, not to mention cheap, leather. So I went out to farm the hide for us. Hoping to ask a close friend who’s a high level Tanner to help later. At first I wanted 2, then I thought oh no, what if he break some? I would have to go through all the troubles coming here to farm again. No, not a good idea. So I farmed more, aiming for just an extra piece of hide for each of us. But in the end I got 7 pieces altogether. And it turned out that Elfi never broke any :O

So, I got 5 extra squares of leather to sell. I put all of them up, all sold at the high curve of price history. I put them on the AH at high end of price margin because it would be rude to undercut people. So, well I got a big chunk of money. Good, now I could have some money to compensate my recent shopping! You know, spending 200k then 50k then 80k etc. buying new equipment really broke my heart, because I’m always poor. So, a mere 50k profit could make my heart jump!

So, today I wanted more profit, and asked Lusi to farm with me, tagging Brune along as a trio. When I first arrived at the camp, I killed 2-3 of the target enemy, then ran into a BST (/anon) who was charming one of those to fight against its own kind. Bwah! Well, Since we came later, I moved further, finding a new camp with my Wide Scan. So we camped far away from him, but at times, when we made a sweep across the length of mountains, we ran into him twice in the middle area between our camp and his camp. Anyway, he was not the problem, you see.

The problem showed up later. As a Taru…. Monk! I can’t believe my fellow Monk would be as hostile towards me! /cry! He was so cruel! Ah, although his name is beginning with “Dog” and I’m a Mithra (cat) which were supposed to be enemy to each other, I didn’t expect him to express it in this form!

Well, we ran into him while we moved from one end of the camp length to the other. I had no intention in yielding my way, because it was quite obvious we arrived first, and the mob popped so fast we couldn’t even cover the whole area before they repopped. So I thought maybe it’s alright if we share on the basis of finders keepers. But well, eventually he sent me a tell. I don’t know what pissed him off so much, probably just our presence as his competitor? Or maybe I answered something that he didn’t like hearing? lol!

The messages were like this, Orange lines are his, Purple lines are mine;

u selling hides or what?
{Synthesis} {ingredients}
i’m going to drop leather price to 4k
Killing crafters?
discouraging ppl like you =)
Like me? Honest crafters who’re farming and crafting for money? lol
lol don’t fucking tell me about honest crafters i took LC to 100 farming all but Griffon hides
and if you check price of hides i’ve done nothing but try to jack the price up
amemet NQ also

And what’s your problem with me then? I don’t understand.

Then he went quiet. I couldn’t understand his point, really.

So here’s all what I’ve guessed and thought to myself;

Maybe he was pissed that I’m competing him in his market?
- But before writing this entry, I checked the AH and found that he wasn’t selling the same leather before me.

Maybe he was pissed that I’m camping against him?
- But we arrived first. =.= That would be a ridiculous reason.

Maybe he was angry that I sold my leather at such high price?
- But I wasn’t the first person to jack up the price. I was only copying the sellers in front of me. And plus, that guy didn’t buy any.

What was his point talking about jacking up the hides price?
- I didn’t touch any hide of that kind in the AH, neither selling nor selling. So, the hides price has nothing to do with me >.>

What was his point in boasting about his farming own hide and leveling up craft to 100, after showing an intention to dump the price in that craft’s market?
- Maybe his reasoning system was broken.

If he really farmed his own Synthesis Ingredients when he leveled up his Leathercraft, why did he have to announce his hostility at me when I answered that I also wanted the ingredients? He allows himself to farm his own ingredients, but other people are evil if they farm too???
- My brother said we should just forget about him, he was just being an ass. =_=;;

He was rude and I’m offended.
- Well, I’m not going to act sissy and claim the woman’s rights here or what, because it’s online game, one can’t know if I’m a girl behind that character. But of course, I wouldn’t consider a stranger who seems to lack self-restraint and curses at someone else so easily a “nice person.” And so he doesn’t seem like a nice person at all, not to mention being unfriendly.

Is it fair for a high level crafter to dump the price of a lowbie (or mid-level) craft when it used to be a profit-making recipe for all the crafters, not only the lower level people?
- No, I don’t think it is.
- I know the market price swings in relation to the balance of demand and supply. So, it’s ok if the price goes up or down naturally, but if I, on purpose, kill the price, it’s not only me who lose profit margin, but also my fellow crafters. I would feel very guilty. So it’s an absolute no-no for me.
- To be specific, imagine being a superior craftsman, crafting something for a profit, then when you see competitors moving in, you decide to dump the price. What would happen? The fellow craftsmen who were leveling on such recipe and selling to gain profit, either for net profit or to cover loss from other recipes, would lose the opportunity to make reasonable amount of money out of that recipe. OMG that’s just so heartless! No, I can’t do that, it’s very selfish.
- I, as a Cook, never dump the price on anything I sell. When I was competing in Cooking markets, I tried to keep the price high or consistent on everything I leveled on, or crafted for profit on. When more competitors moved into a specific market I was in, and when they started undercutting to the point I could not tolerate, I moved to a new one. There’s no use helping them dumping the price. Then I would come back when they all killed their own profit and all moved out from my market, leaving the market price returned to normal. That’s what had happened to my Navarin, Dhalmel Pie, Orange Kuchen, and Shallop Tropicale markets. Killing the market will eventually kill yourself.

Then why did he talk so proudly of his absurd plan to ruin the market?
- I have absolutely no idea.

Why did he get mad at me in the first place?
- No idea, he didn’t reply to that question.

What was his definition of “ppl like you” ?
- Hmmm, it must be how he thought I was. Probably it means people who compete in his market, or people who compete in his farm? But that’s just silly, because as far as I know, I arrived before him in both. Or maybe he meant people who sells things at high price? Then again this is ridiculous, because when there’s an opportunity to make profit, it’s just natural that one would jump on it. If he despised me because of this reason, he must have something wrong in his head.

Then, what am I?
- To me I am;
– A Monk who was happily leveling up her guard skill while farming with friends.
– A Vana’diel adventurer in need of money.
– A person who saw opportunity to make some money and didn’t let it fly by.
– A decent player who avoided Beastmaster’s camp because he might be leveling up (couldn’t say for sure because he was /anon so it was impossible to tell his level)
– A competitive farmer who doesn’t yield the way to other farmer, first comes first serves.

That’s it, and the most possible reason why he got mad at me might be the last one?

Judging from how he inserted a swearing word in his reply immediately after I mentioned “honest crafters,” maybe he has some grudge about that?
- Probably. But I really have no idea and see no connection.

———————————————————————————————

Well, from my point of view I cannot understand him any tiny bit. And it seemed he was so hostile that he didn’t want to nicely explain to me, he even disregarded my bottom line question. Well, you can’t correct your behavior if the person would not tell you what you did wrong, right? It won’t help the society to improve any bit if one keeps getting mad at people without giving them proper suggestion or advice. It’s like giving a negative comment on a piece of work from someone, and you scold the owner of the work. If the person is not an expert and he couldn’t figure what’s wrong with his work, how on earth could he go back and improve it? It’s just ridiculously heartless, don’t you think?

I always hate people who only scold or curse without giving any advice. It’s like they just talk badly to you just because they want to bash someone, not because they want the righteousness or want to help any person. If one want to help the society, don’t just give negative comment, but guide it to the correct direction too! That’s how human, as a social animal, help each other make the world a better place.

Oh, and be polite!

I also hate people who don’t treat strangers well. I’ve read from somewhere, and I really agree and like it, that you could roughly judge whether a person is nice or evil by looking at the way he treats strangers and treats people who don’t give him profit or advantage. Also, it’s said that people usually reveal their true colour when they’re upset or when don’t get what they want. If they get rude right away, it probably means they’re rude by nature.

P.S. It’s really my first time to run into such a hostile farming competitor (except that RMT group who tried to MPK us) and it really made me sad to have known such a person exists in the beautiful world of Vana’diel and, most of all, to have been unlucky enough to run into one.

P.S.2 To be honest, at first I intended to be on this market just temporarily, but since he provoked me that much, I felt like I want to compete with him and see how he will kill his own profit in the end, lol.

This is continuing from previous entry;

28 AUG 2009, tonight I just re-discovered my old thread I posted on Allakhazam years ago, back in 2004. I think it should also be recorded here. So, I’m posting it in my blog, but using the old date to mark when it really happened. Since the thread was written on 13 September 2004, I’m using that date here too. Oh, and I’m putting this story in my  FFXI Peeves category because he’s such a big pet-peeve.

I still regret it until today that I didn’t react sooner by kicking this WHM out from my party or just make everyone disband and reform PT without him. So, I do apologize to everyone who reads this post and finds me an inefficient PT leader. I’m deeply sorry I let this thing happen. I’m especially sorry towards other PT members in both incidents.

—————————–
Original post is below;
—————————–

This will be a long story, and maybe kind of a rant. But I just need third (& fourth, fifth, sixth?..so on) opinions. For those who think I’m babbling too much, I have a very very short summary too.

Summary:
In case it’s too long, I have sum up the matters here.

In Qufim, I and my LS mates have ran into a WHM who:

1. Was extremely demanding.
2. Orders people around.
3. Replaces a ‘Connection Lost’ member at once.
4. Has little, or no, patience.
5. Looks down on others.
6. Camps NM on the other computer while playing a WHM in a full party.
7. Abandons his duty during battles.
8. Being rude, or at least seems to be rude.

I told myself I would never forget his name and that I will never ever want to party with him again.
Later I told my LS mates that this WHM is a type of player that makes my head explode.

———————————————————————————–

The real issue:
Emperor Hairpin vs. Your Duty

The next day I became a liar to myself…  A friend invited this WHM in while we were forming a party for level 21-22. If my memory is correct, our PT layout was WAR (me) DRG THF (these 2 are my LS friends, same ones as the day before) NIN SMN and that WHM.

We headed to the lake this time, and camped in the middle of the lake. Before we got to the camp, my thf friend (he was the leader) lost his connection (so his leadership fell into my place, which, I told myself whatever happens, never ever give that WHM the leadership). 5 minutes passed and he hasn’t got back, meanwhile we headed to the camp. We emerged off the tunnel to the mouth of the canyon and I said to the party, just to let them know what’s on my mind.

Me : Our THF had a little problem with his connection. I think he will be back soon. Could we wait for him for 5 more minutes? If he’s not by that time I’ll replace him.
Mythrain: Let’s find a new member, don’t wait for him.
Me (in my mind) : Duh! This party was formed for him, not you!

NOTE: The one who lost connection was the LEADER who INVITED this whm in.
I was thinking about how ungrateful he was, but I didn’t say it.

Me : No, that’s a mean thing to do. No one wants to have a connection lost.
Me: I’d like to give him a chance join us again when he gets back. I never kicked a member who loses connection.

I was hoping he would get the hint, but darn, no, he did not.

Mythrain: Oh well, I never waited because they never come back.

I had an urge to shout into his face “Yesterday you kicked our DRG within 2 minutes so he had no place to get in when he returned!” But I restrained myself and waited on. Our other members, especially that sweet SMN, were very understanding. After a few minutes, the THF came back and hurried to the lake. While we were all near the lake, and the THF was half way to the lake, WHM again lost his patience and said;

Mythrain: I say we don’t wait for him!

Meh, little did he know that I had already invited him back into the party and that he’s already coming to us.

Me : He’s on his way, and back into the party already.
Mythrain: Fine! If you want to get overkilled by the undeads!
Me : Ok, OK. So, let’s pull. Who pulls?
Mythrain: SA pull.
Others: !!??

Well, the only person with Sneak Attack hasn’t arrived yet, and he said we should not wait for him, but he’s demanding a SA pull?

THF (into LS) : =_= Who has SA?
DRG (into LS) : It’s you!
THF (into LS) : -_-a

So we pulled when the THF got to the camp. In the first battle, our NIN hit the wrong macro and exploded himself and went back to HP. He hurried back while saying sorry to us so many times. We all (except the WHM) understood him and cheered him up. While he was running back, the WHM insisted upon having our SMN call out her avatar and nuke.

Mythrain: Why don’t you summon?
SMN : Because my elemental pacts are too weak.
Mythrain: Use Ramuh!
SMN : That consumes my MP a lot.
Mythrain: For god’s sake, just summon! We need nuke power so the NIN won’t have to bomb himself again!
THF : Don’t you ever read the chat log??? It was an accident!!!!!!
NIN : I’m sorry. Wrong macro.
Me : No prob, accident happens.
Mythrain: Well, whatever. We still need nuker.
THF : No we don’t, we?ll just waste the precious MP which can be used for backup healing.

Then he started to comment on the SMN avatars being weak and other things. He also talked big about his level 45 THF and maybe some other high level jobs, which we tried not to pay attention and got on with the battles.

At night falls, Banshees popped here and there. We moved our camp to the ice in the middle of the lake, surrounded by undeads.

NIN : We shouldn’t stay here. Banshees are around.
SNM : He’s right, we can’t fight here.
Mythrain: Yes you can. You guys just don’t know how.
Me : If you know, then why don’t you tell us how?
Mythrain: ((suddenly turned quiet))

So the brave thf sneaked out and pulled Clipper into our camp. We gained a lot of EXP there. Everything was good except that was had limited space to move around when fighting. At one point, that darn WHM started to not throwing in his Cure as much as he should. The SMN was the first who noticed and commented that the WHM hasn’t been doing much during battle. I agreed when I watched more closely in the next fight, he only cast cure twice in one battle. Sometimes the WHM only sat still through out the battle, while SMN worked hard as a main healer. She was doing great because she could keep us all alive even when we got to red and orange HPs despite the fact that she had no CureII yet.

We found out later, because the WHM came back and bragged about it, why he wasn’t doing his duty.

Mythrain: Sorry guys, I was running between computers.
Someone: Why so? You weren’t curing us when we need HP.
Mythrain: The Emperor ain’t beating my THF.
Mythrain: I got the damn hairpin. That’s why I was AFK.
SMN : You should have let us know before going AFK.

Of course he didn’t response to the comment. We kept pulling because we wanted EXP for SMN, she was only a few hundreds tnl. During the battle, I tried to search for other WHM to replace him. We had no luck. The WHM still went AFK, or at least seemed to be AFK, for the next few fights. So I finally spoke up.

Me : Why you weren’t curing us? The party was in a bad shape and you did nothing! I have a feeling that you’re trying to murder us.
SMN : We thought we lost you like 8 times during the battles.
Me : You’re not doing your duty. I’m known to have incredible patience but everything has its own limit. I’m afraid we’ll find other WHM who’s more willing to cast cure.

He didn’t response, of course. He just acted like nothing happened and that he didn’t see what I said to him. While I was about to boot him (after secretly discussed it in /tell with my members) our SMN dinged to her next level. So, we decided to bid a farewell and disbanded. Suddenly the WHM spoke up in /say

Mythrain: WTF!
Mythrain: I’m only 600 tnl!
Me : Aww, too bad. Sorry about that, but everyone had to leave. Good bye.

So we all left, letting him mind his own business. I know it’s quite unkind if most party members gained a level each and abruptly disband when someone (who would ding last) is very close to level, but I didn’t want other nice people such as the SMN and the NIN to suffer from partying with such WHM anymore so I didn’t even try to ask others to stay. Later I found out that he formed his own party, I only felt sorry for those whom he invited.

——————————————————–

I’ve got a variety of reaction from posters in allakhazam board. All were good advice. So I decided to listen to them and remember the concept, so later I would NEVER ever let such crap happen in my party again.

For examples;

- Be polite, but stern. Be stern, yes, stern!
- Be decisive, and exercise my power (as a pt leader.)
- Do not restrain from weeding bad players out of my party.
- Do not tolerate such unacceptable behaviors.
- SMN or other mages can be main healer too.
- Therefore, do not let such WHM make my PT suffer ever again.

Some other things I told myself to remember is;

- If I end up in a PT with someone I marked as my enemy before, leave immediately.
- Never let go of my leadership to a stranger.
- If leadership falls to someone undesirable, and he refuses to give it back, disband and regroup.
- Hold my anger, not my tongue. Let my opinion be known when necessary.
- Do not hesitate to state a polite criticism.

———————————————————————————–

First of all I must confess that there are too many people involved so I might not be accurate about their jobs in the game.

Intro:
Patience is a virtue

3 Days ago I and my 2 LS mates headed to Qufim for a level 19-21 party. We were THF DRG and WAR (me.) We found ourselves another Damage Dealer (which I think was maybe a THF) and 2 WHMs. While we were heading out to Qufim, my drg friend realized his HP was in the dunes so he ran to the HP in Port Jeuno to set HP as well as getting Signet. Meanwhile, one of our WHMs whose name is Mythrain (he’s the star of this story) kept saying a lot of things like;

“hurry!”
“I want my EXP”
“let’s pull”
“if you don’t come soon I’m gonna solo this Clipper.”

This was fine for me, though my ls friends were complaining in LS chat a little about his big mouth. I thought he might mean no harm, and was only a little too enthusiastic or just a hyper player.

However, things got worse when he started to get bossy and demanding. Sometimes he fired an unkind response to us when we were just suggesting something. For instance; (these are not exact words, but I try to recall the most correct context)

Someone: You can switch turns to heal so we can keep exp rolling in.
Mythrain: PULL! We know what we’re doing.

Or

Someone: Why don’t you sit now and let her cure us?
Mythrain: You guys just go pull. Don’t mind my business.

During the fights, our drg lost his connection twice, and came back as soon as he could. I reinvited him when he got on, too. At night, we got aggroed by a Banshee so we all scattered, many of us zoned except me who was bound and slept. We managed to survived somehow and the Banshee stopped aggroing (maybe some high level player killed it in the tunnel) The other WHM had to leave. So we had to find new member as well as reform the party (we disbanded in an attempt to lose party hate)
I tried to reinvite the WHM, he declined 2 times. So I sent a tell asking him whether he wanted to join us again or not. To which he replied?

“Invite me when you have 5 members”

Granted. Not many people are willing to wait around for a party which has no idea when will it be full.

But 10 seconds later, he told me to invite him because he had to run to town to fetch new scrolls. I did so and we rested for a while. Trying to find other members, we found that a RDM (maybe) popped in Port Jeuno. Mythrain told me to pass the leadership so he could invite him, and I did. We started killing those crabs again. At one point, the WHM remained sitting after we fought for a while, and my HP got to the orange zone. He got up, Divine Seal and threw a big cure on me. At the moment he got aggroed, my Provoke was 10 secs until ready, the DRG Voked but couldn’t take it off him. So the WHM ended up kissing the earth.

Mythrain: OK Find yourselves a new WHM! I have had hate for too long.
Me : I’m sorry, my voke wasn’t ready.
DRG : I’m sorry, I voked but it wouldn’t come.
Mythrain: His voke was no good! If I die again I’m outty.
Me : I’ll try my best not to let you get hit next time.

He HP’ed and ran back again. After we got back to killing the crabs, my drg friend lost connection again, this time during the resting period. 2 Minutes later (maybe less) I saw him coming back into the game so I tried to invite him back, but it said I can’t because I wasn’t the leader. I hardly pay attention to whether people give me back the leadership or not, so I made a big mistake that day. Just as I was about to ask Mythrain to invite him, the 6th member popped into our party list. I went like “WTF” in my mind. While my THF friend was swearing into our LS chat. I told the ?kicked? friend to wait for a while because someone had already pulled. He stood around for about 1-2 battles. Then, bitterly, he logged off.

Our new member was a WAR, I think. At one point the WHM examined him and?

Mythrain: OMG You need a better gear!
WAR : This is my sub. My main is way higher so I don’t have gear for level 20.
Mythrain: My armors are bad but yours are CRAPS!!!! (or something similar, I cannot remember the exact word he used, I only remember that it was a very mean comment to make)
WAR : I could run back to buy new ones if I need to, would you wait?
Mythrain: Pull!!! Let’s kill for EXP.

During one fight, the WHM got too much hate, I spent my voke. Then he got aggroed again so the other WAR voked and said:

WAR : Don’t cast big before 30 secs.
WHM : Don’t whine (or something to that effect, I can’t remember the word he used), I’m dealing more dmg than you!
All : ??!!

After a few battles, he started to cease curing, then he only stood around. I think he lost his connection, and yes he got D/C’ed and never returned. We continued our PT by getting back our sad DRG and invited a new PLD. I told myself I would remember his name forever and would never ever party with him again. He wasn’t just rude as a WHM, but also as a player, as well as a human.

But no, unfortunately, my encounter with him didn’t end here.
