28 AUG 2009, tonight I just re-discovered my old thread I posted on Allakhazam years ago, back in 2004. I think it should also be recorded here. So, I’m posting it in my blog, but using the old date to mark when it really happened. Since the thread was written on 13 September 2004, I’m using that date here too. Oh, and I’m putting this story in my FFXI Peeves category because he’s such a big pet-peeve.

I still regret it until today that I didn’t react sooner by kicking this WHM out from my party or just make everyone disband and reform PT without him. So, I do apologize to everyone who reads this post and finds me an inefficient PT leader. I’m deeply sorry I let this thing happen. I’m especially sorry towards other PT members in both incidents.

This will be a long story, and maybe kind of a rant. But I just need third (& fourth, fifth, sixth?..so on) opinions. For those who think I’m babbling too much, I have a very very short summary too.
Summary:
In case it’s too long, I have sum up the matters here.
In Qufim, I and my LS mates have ran into a WHM who:
1. Was extremely demanding.
2. Orders people around.
3. Replaces a ‘Connection Lost’ member at once.
4. Has little, or no, patience.
5. Looks down on others.
6. Camps NM on the other computer while playing a WHM in a full party.
7. Abandons his duty during battles.
8. Being rude, or at least seems to be rude.
I told myself I would never forget his name and that I will never ever want to party with him again.
Later I told my LS mates that this WHM is a type of player that makes my head explode.

The real issue:
Emperor Hairpin vs. Your Duty
The next day I became a liar to myself… A friend invited this WHM in while we were forming a party for level 21-22. If my memory is correct, our PT layout was WAR (me) DRG THF (these 2 are my LS friends, same ones as the day before) NIN SMN and that WHM.
We headed to the lake this time, and camped in the middle of the lake. Before we got to the camp, my thf friend (he was the leader) lost his connection (so his leadership fell into my place, which, I told myself whatever happens, never ever give that WHM the leadership). 5 minutes passed and he hasn’t got back, meanwhile we headed to the camp. We emerged off the tunnel to the mouth of the canyon and I said to the party, just to let them know what’s on my mind.
Me : Our THF had a little problem with his connection. I think he will be back soon. Could we wait for him for 5 more minutes? If he’s not by that time I’ll replace him.
Mythrain: Let’s find a new member, don’t wait for him.
Me (in my mind) : Duh! This party was formed for him, not you!
NOTE: The one who lost connection was the LEADER who INVITED this whm in.
I was thinking about how ungrateful he was, but I didn’t say it.
Me : No, that’s a mean thing to do. No one wants to have a connection lost.
Me: I’d like to give him a chance join us again when he gets back. I never kicked a member who loses connection.
I was hoping he would get the hint, but darn, no, he did not.
Mythrain: Oh well, I never waited because they never come back.
I had an urge to shout into his face “Yesterday you kicked our DRG within 2 minutes so he had no place to get in when he returned!” But I restrained myself and waited on. Our other members, especially that sweet SMN, were very understanding. After a few minutes, the THF came back and hurried to the lake. While we were all near the lake, and the THF was half way to the lake, WHM again lost his patience and said;
Mythrain: I say we don’t wait for him!
Meh, little did he know that I had already invited him back into the party and that he’s already coming to us.
Me : He’s on his way, and back into the party already.
Mythrain: Fine! If you want to get overkilled by the undeads!
Me : Ok, OK. So, let’s pull. Who pulls?
Mythrain: SA pull.
Others: !!??
Well, the only person with Sneak Attack hasn’t arrived yet, and he said we should not wait for him, but he’s demanding a SA pull?
THF (into LS) : =_= Who has SA?
DRG (into LS) : It’s you!
THF (into LS) : -_-a
So we pulled when the THF got to the camp. In the first battle, our NIN hit the wrong macro and exploded himself and went back to HP. He hurried back while saying sorry to us so many times. We all (except the WHM) understood him and cheered him up. While he was running back, the WHM insisted upon having our SMN call out her avatar and nuke.
Mythrain: Why don’t you summon?
SMN : Because my elemental pacts are too weak.
Mythrain: Use Ramuh!
SMN : That consumes my MP a lot.
Mythrain: For god’s sake, just summon! We need nuke power so the NIN won’t have to bomb himself again!
THF : Don’t you ever read the chat log??? It was an accident!!!!!!
NIN : I’m sorry. Wrong macro.
Me : No prob, accident happens.
Mythrain: Well, whatever. We still need nuker.
THF : No we don’t, we?ll just waste the precious MP which can be used for backup healing.
Then he started to comment on the SMN avatars being weak and other things. He also talked big about his level 45 THF and maybe some other high level jobs, which we tried not to pay attention and got on with the battles.
At night falls, Banshees popped here and there. We moved our camp to the ice in the middle of the lake, surrounded by undeads.
NIN : We shouldn’t stay here. Banshees are around.
SNM : He’s right, we can’t fight here.
Mythrain: Yes you can. You guys just don’t know how.
Me : If you know, then why don’t you tell us how?
Mythrain: ((suddenly turned quiet))
So the brave thf sneaked out and pulled Clipper into our camp. We gained a lot of EXP there. Everything was good except that was had limited space to move around when fighting. At one point, that darn WHM started to not throwing in his Cure as much as he should. The SMN was the first who noticed and commented that the WHM hasn’t been doing much during battle. I agreed when I watched more closely in the next fight, he only cast cure twice in one battle. Sometimes the WHM only sat still through out the battle, while SMN worked hard as a main healer. She was doing great because she could keep us all alive even when we got to red and orange HPs despite the fact that she had no CureII yet.
We found out later, because the WHM came back and bragged about it, why he wasn’t doing his duty.
Mythrain: Sorry guys, I was running between computers.
Someone: Why so? You weren’t curing us when we need HP.
Mythrain: The Emperor ain’t beating my THF.
Mythrain: I got the damn hairpin. That’s why I was AFK.
SMN : You should have let us know before going AFK.
Of course he didn’t response to the comment. We kept pulling because we wanted EXP for SMN, she was only a few hundreds tnl. During the battle, I tried to search for other WHM to replace him. We had no luck. The WHM still went AFK, or at least seemed to be AFK, for the next few fights. So I finally spoke up.
Me : Why you weren’t curing us? The party was in a bad shape and you did nothing! I have a feeling that you’re trying to murder us.
SMN : We thought we lost you like 8 times during the battles.
Me : You’re not doing your duty. I’m known to have incredible patience but everything has its own limit. I’m afraid we’ll find other WHM who’s more willing to cast cure.
He didn’t response, of course. He just acted like nothing happened and that he didn’t see what I said to him. While I was about to boot him (after secretly discussed it in /tell with my members) our SMN dinged to her next level. So, we decided to bid a farewell and disbanded. Suddenly the WHM spoke up in /say
Mythrain: WTF!
Mythrain: I’m only 600 tnl!
Me : Aww, too bad. Sorry about that, but everyone had to leave. Good bye.
So we all left, letting him mind his own business. I know it’s quite unkind if most party members gained a level each and abruptly disband when someone (who would ding last) is very close to level, but I didn’t want other nice people such as the SMN and the NIN to suffer from partying with such WHM anymore so I didn’t even try to ask others to stay. Later I found out that he formed his own party, I only felt sorry for those whom he invited.

I’ve got a variety of reaction from posters in allakhazam board. All were good advice. So I decided to listen to them and remember the concept, so later I would NEVER ever let such crap happen in my party again.
For examples;
- Be polite, but stern. Be stern, yes, stern!
- Be decisive, and exercise my power (as a pt leader.)
- Do not restrain from weeding bad players out of my party.
- Do not tolerate such unacceptable behaviors.
- SMN or other mages can be main healer too.
- Therefore, do not let such WHM make my PT suffer ever again.
Some other things I told myself to remember is;
- If I end up in a PT with someone I marked as my enemy before, leave immediately.
- Never let go of my leadership to a stranger.
- If leadership falls to someone undesirable, and he refuses to give it back, disband and regroup.
- Hold my anger, not my tongue. Let my opinion be known when necessary.
- Do not hesitate to state a polite criticism.
