In the event that my 2nd chocobo, AlphaZephyr, reached day 64 a few days ago, I am summarizing his stats here for my own reference.

If you’re reading this and have some question, or have anything to share, please feel free to register and post your reply. I don’t bite.

The detailed spreadsheet can be found here. Aleczan’s New Chocobo 22 August 2009 : AlphaZephyr

I’ve kept track of what I did for my chocobo each day. The question mark in a cell means I cannot remember. The blank ones probably meant I don’t remember too. But the one with a dash ( – ) in it means I realized later that I forgot to do that stuff, and can also means that it is not available.

Again today, after I got home, I checked my blog stats. And uhh….there are so many off-topic search keywords that lead people to my site. Well, some aren’t really off-topic, but I didn’t talk about them in detail. Some, unfortunately, were only mentioned because I was telling something related to it. So, the real answers couldn’t be found, sorry.

As now I’m quite free after clearing a shit load of work, and I cannot go anywhere while waiting for Chocobo Racing cutscene to finish, I’ll go over some of the Search Engine Terms of this week. (My blog stats system only keeps access keywords for 7 days).

Yes I’ve written about this topic. But it was mostly rough guidelines and thus the information is untidy. Maybe I should make a FAQ list? =_= Uhh when I’m not lazy, I promise I will.

My brother owns a black chocobo, and I own 2 red chocobos. You can see the pics in my blog, under “FFXI Chocobo” category. I’ve written about them and uploaded screenshots a lot.

chocobo raising color day 19

Day 19 is when your chocobo turns from baby (chick) to teen (adolescence). On Day 19, you’ll be able to notice the colour that it will become when it fully grows on Day 29.

ffxi chocobo learn story after day 64
ffxi chocobo learn ability after retire

Skill, or “abilities” as it is called in the game for chocobo, is what must be taught via “Tell a story” care option when you talk to Chocobo Caretaker at your stables. But you need to obtain the key item that is specific for the ability that you want first. Each story requires different level of minimum intelligence (discernment) of the chocobo. Some can be taught easily, needing lower discernment, while some needs much more.

On the question of “when,” well, my first red chocobo, ArashiZetsuei, learnt both Burrow and Treasure Finder on day 34, just a few days after reaching adulthood. Her discernment level was Outstanding, but I strongly believe that those stories didn’t require such high discernment.

If your chocobo doesn’t learn ability early, you can keep trying until it retires.

I have, through patience and strong will, taught my brother’s racing chocobo the ability “Gallop” on Day 89, and then after discernment became Average, “Canter” on Day 96. So, yes, chocobo can learn ability after its growth becomes stabilized on Day 64. Retired chocobo, on the other hand, cannot learn any more ability, because to teach an ability, you MUST read it a story. And reading story can only be done while chocobo is raised in the stables.

chocobo stats
chocobo care plan ffxi
how to upgrade chocobo in ffxi

Chocobo stats, or “attributes” as it is called in the games, are;
1. Endurance : in general, this determines how long you can ride your chocobo in 1 call.
2. Strength : this is your chocobo’s speed.
3. Discernment : this is intelligence, chocobo will be dumb and won’t easily learn abilities with low discernment.
4. Receptivity : helps to increase the chance of the egg to inherit its ability and stats.
5. Energy : the HP bar which depletes when you care for your chocobo daily.
6. Affection : how much it loves you, if you neglect it, the love will drop easily.
7. Satisfaction : how full the chocobo’s tummy is. Do not feed when it reaches “Completely full.”

Care plan, is what you assign the Chocobo Caretaker at the stables to do for you on daily basis. The type of care plan activities will determine what attributes will be gained or lost.

In order to upgrade your chocobo, which I believe that the searcher meant “raising attributes,” you can pick from a lot of choices.
– Feeding, can grow stats a tiny bit. You have to choose the food carefully too.
– Assigning Care Plan, this plays an important role in growing your chocobo’s attributes.
– Kamp Kweh, get a random chance for stats up, but to participate, you need a party member who’s currently keeping a chocobo in the stables.
– Training, by using Chocobucks to pay for the upgrade that you want.
– Doing Direct Care, like taking for a walk, or reading a story, are said to help grow the stats too.

ffxi raise chocobo time real life
ff11 chocobo growth age’s

It requires daily care for 29 days before the chocobo fully grows. However, you will need a few more days to obtain the quest, getting a chocobo whistle, in order to be able to call your chocobo to a field and ride it like rental chocobo.

The Egg you give to a Chocobo Stables Person will hatch and become a chick on Day 4.
Then it will grow into a teenage or adolescence on Day 19, showing its colour.
Eventually, it will bebome an adult chocobo on day 29.
You can choose to retire it (and be able to ride it if you already gotten the whistle quest done, race it, dig treasure with it, etc) or keep raising it in the stables to gain more attributes or teach abilities.
Then, at Day 64, the Stables Person will say that your chocobo’s growth has become stabilized, meaning that it no longer gain stats from Care Plan.
You can, however, keep raising it for other purpose. Like, for examples, training for stats upgrade of your choice, or doing Kamp Kweh with friends.
Finally, on Day 129, you will be forced to retire your chocobo.

Your raised chocobo will be able to provide you the taxi service forever, even if you have selected other chocobo to be linked with your Chocobo Whistle. You only need to keep the “VCS Reg. Card.” It will have the name of your chocobo, so you won’t get confused which is whose. When you want to come back to ride, or dig, on a specific chocobo of yours, you have to register its card at the Stables Person.

Oh, right, I almost forgot… Chocobo’s day at the stables will change after 24 real life hour. And the day starts from since you traded the egg to Stables person. So, if you traded your egg at 9 P.M. (21.00) in your timezone, even though tomorrow at 11 A.M. (11.00 – before noon) is already a new day for you, the new day won’t start for your chocobo until it becomes 9 P.M. again.

how much do u need to feed chocobo ff11

You need to feed it at least one item each day. And each day you can keep feeding it until it says the chocobo is “completely full.” However, I strongly believe that your chocobo will gain back the energy (HP) according to how much you feed it. So, it’s best to feed it until completely full. Also, how much energy you spend will determine how hungry it becomes on the next day. For example, if you use only half of the energy bar, tomorrow it will say “neither hungry nor full,” allowing you to feed less food than usual.

So, I would say, each day you should feed your chocobo to full, then use up all the chocobo’s energy, then repeat on the next day.

Some food will eat up more space in your chocobo’s tummy. Like, if you feed a carrot, then a carrot, it will become just “quite full” allowing you to feed one more item. But if you feed a carrot, then an azouph green, it will become completely full. So, the order of feeding is also important.

Also, remember to ALWAYS feed food one by one for best result. Never trade a bunch of items at the same time.

***

ffxi chocobo affection dropping

Affection will gradually drop by default, even on Basic Care. So, if you do not check on your chocobo, do not care for it, do not feed it, the love will lower. The more advanced care plan, like Exhibiting to the public, will lower the affection faster than the basic ones like Basic care and Listening to Music. So, you need to watch out for the dropping affection and balance your daily care.

If your chocobo’s affection drop, you have several choices to choose from, and you can combine more than just 1.

– Assigning the “Rest” care plan at the Stables for one day or a few days. Because resting is the only care plan that does not lower affection.
– Choosing other care plan that lower less affection.
– Doing direct care, like watch over, wake for a walk, tell a story, etc. All of the direct care, except “Scold” will increase affection.
– Feeding affection food, for example, Azouph Green.
– Feeding energy food, like Chocolixir, in order to do more direct care on that day.

how to steal chocobo whistle

Your chocobo outwitted you, eh?

If you meant that you’re unable to steal the dirty handkerchief from the chocobo in order to get the quest’s reward from San d’Oria stables person, then I feel your pain! That happened to me A LOT too. I don’t know if it was totally random or was because my chocobo had so high Discernment =_= But yeah, whenever I tried to spy on it, it always turned!

People said that, to succeed, you need to wait until you get the message of something like “Your chocobo seems to be totally absorbed in its activity.” Because that means it was off-guard and you can steal the handkerchief easily. On the day I succeeded in stealing, I noticed that I actually had gotten that message before attempting the steal.

Racing….. Well, free run can only be registered after you’ve cleared all 3 novice races. Novice runs can be found under “Official Run” menu, when you talk to the chocobo racing NPC.

My digger chocobo could win those first 3 official races just fine, even though it was kinda slow.

It is said that Discernment (or intelligence) helps the race because it makes your chocobo manage the stamina well. So, if you have very high Discernment but only standard Strength, you can still win races.

I’ve witnessed this. My brother’s racer chocobo had lost to some other ordinary chocobo in Free Runs before. His chocobo had poor Discernment at that time. So, although it had First-Class STR and END, it still lost the race…. I think it was because it had so low Discernment that it messed up the stamina management and ended up losing speed near the end of the race, letting other chocobos pass in front. Getting 1 Chocobuck instread of 3 on so many run was upsetting!

Later on, when his Discernment improved, the race became more satisfying, though he, still, cannot outrun each of the 3 super chocobos.

I think….that’s it for today. So many sets of keywords already.

There are a few keywords that are not related to FFXI chocobo, on which I shall continue later.

Well, here we go, continuing from last entry – General Information on Chocobo Raising.

Here are rough guides on Digger Chocobo and Racer Chocobo, based on my first-handed experience in raising a digger of my own, and babysitting my brother’s runner. My methods of raising chocobo are based on of information obtained from reading various sources, mainly FFXI wiki, and from asking some experienced chocobo raisers.

For detailed raising methods, day by day, I’ve kept a record of my own digger here, in Google Document.

*Participating in Kamp Kweh and then letting your chocobo play with other chocobo will allow you a chance to get small bonus in one of the stats. This can be done (successfully) once a day. If you haven’t gotten any stat rise with one chocobo, you can still try with other chocobos. However, repeating “Let it Play With Other” with the same old chocobo that didn’t give you any stat on that day will never gain you the stat. It seems like the system of whether you get stat bonus is based on one-time random per day per partner. *

*Kamp Kweh can raise chocobo’s attributes even after the growth stops after Day 64, so keep doing Kamp Kweh everyday will help you a lot.*

**********************
Digger Chocobo
**********************

As an owner of a Digger Chocobo, or Chocobo with more Psychological Attributes,  I would suggest this…

(Day 0 – Day 3)
Of course spam “Watch Over” on the egg.

(Day 4 – Day 18)
Feed with Zegham Carrots.
Set Care Schedule to “Listen to Music” in order to boost
Psychological StatsDiscernment and Receptivity.
*Listening to Music will decrease Physical Stats - Strength and Endurace* << But don’t worry, those are already at lowest level, Poor.
Dont forget Kamp Kweh.

(Day 19 – Day 28)
Keep feeding with Zegham Carrots. Should add Azouph Greens too, to maintain high affection level.
Change Care Schedule to “Exhibit to Public,”
boosting Discernment and Receptivity even more.
*Exhibiting to Publiv will also decrease Strength and Endurace*
*Exhibiting to Public will decrease Affection faster than Listening to Music*
Dont forget Kamp Kweh.

(Day 29 – Day 64)
Feed Zegham Carrots and Azouph Greens on regular basis.
Read your chocobo the story for Burrow, Treasure Finder, or Bore if you wish.
*You can only teach 2 skills to one chocobo*

Keep on doing the Exhibit to Public” Care Plan, but….
If you want a big, big boost on Discernment, while not caring about getting any Receptivity, use “Dig For Treasure.”
*Digging For Treasure will decrease Endurance*
*Digging For Treasure will decrease Affection much faster than Exhibiting*

Use “Raise Attribute” option, by spending 80 Chocobucks at a Chocobo Racing Authority to upgrade any stat that you want.
* Will require about 7 upgrades to fully raise the attribute 1 level, i.e. from A Bit Deficient to Average*

*Keep racing and digging for Chocobucks everyday*
Dont forget Kamp Kweh.

(Alternate methods don’t have to start right on day 29, you can start it when you feel like, or when you think you get enough stats of your desire and want to change method.)
(Day 29 – Day 64) Alternate Method 1
If you think your Chocobo has more than enough Discernment to learn any ability that you want….
(Actually, you should stock it up very high, for future decrease)

Still feed Azouph Greens for affection.
– Either feed
Zegham Carrots to compensate with the opposite Care Plan or
– Change feed to Vomp Carrots to help boost Physical Attributes.

Change Care Plan to start boosting Physical Stats instead….
– Either use “Carry Packages” to increase both Strength and Endurance, but this will lower
Discernment and Receptivity.
- Or use “Deliver Message” to big boost only Strength, while sacrificing with the loss of Receptivity.
*There’s no Care Plan that can big boost Endurance alone*
*Carrying Packages will decrease Affection as fast as Exhibiting*
*Delivering Message will decrease Affection as fast as Digging for Treasure*

Mean while, everyday, read your chocobo the story for Burrow, Treasure Finder, or Bore if you wish.
*You can only teach 2 skills to one chocobo*
*They said that even when you fail to teach the ability, reading stories to your chocobo can help increase Discernment a little*

(Day 29 – Day 64) Alternate Method 2
If you think your Chocobo has just barely enough Discernment to learn abilities, and don’t want it to decrease….
Change Care Plan to Basic Care to preserve Discernment (and Receptivity) while increase Strength and Endurance for small amount each day.

Still feed Azouph Greens for affection.
– Either feed
Zegham Carrots to help increase in Psylogocal Stats or….
– Change feed to Vomp Carrots to help boost Physical Stats.

Mean while, everyday, read your chocobo the story for Burrow, Treasure Finder, or Bore if you wish.
*They said that even when you fail to teach the ability, reading stories to your chocobo can help increase Discernment a little*
*You can only teach 2 skills to one chocobo*

Use “Raise Attribute” option, by spending 80 Chocobucks at a Chocobo Racing Authority to upgrade any stat that you want.
* Will require about 7 upgrades to fully raise the attribute 1 level, i.e. from A Bit Deficient to Average*

*Keep racing and digging for Chocobucks everyday*
Dont forget Kamp Kweh.

(After Day 64)
To save money, you can change feed to San d’Orian Carrots from now on.
Keep the Azouph Greens on the menu if you wish.

Since Care Plan on Schedule won’t help any stat anymore, change it to Basic Care, permanently.

Keep racing, digging, and upgrading attributes of your choice.
Keep reading the stories of your choice if your chocobo hasn’t learnt the skill.

Dont forget Kamp Kweh. You can still gain stats from Kamp Kweh at this stage.

My Chocobo, ArashiZetsuei, is now on Day 99. I’ve followed my plan carefully, making few mistakes.
I’ve raced her a lot everyday (if I didn’t forget to), earning as many Chocobucks as I could while avoid spending ridiculous amount of gil.
I’ve tried to dig for treasure and Chocobucks everyday.
I’ve used Chocobucks to upgrade her stats, as recorded in my Google Doc.
I’ve tried to do Kamp Kweh as often as I could.
Now her attributes are as follow;

Strength: Impressive (lv 6)
Endurance: Average (lv 4)
Discernment: First-Class (lv 8.)
Receptivity: Better Than Average (lv 5)

Abilities: Burrow and Treasure Finder

—————————————————————————————-

By the way, I’ve kept a record of all I’ve done in raising my chocobo in a Google Document >HERE< In case someone is interested in the details.

—————————————————————————————-

*********************
Racer Chocobo
*********************

Basically, for a Racer Chocobo, or chocobo with more Physical Attributes, we must do everything opposite to what I had done to my chocobo.

(Day 0 – Day 3)
Of course spam “Watch Over” on the egg.

(Day 4 – Day 18)
Feed with Vomp Carrots.
Set Care Schedule to “Take a Walk in Town” in order to boost
Physical Stats – Strength and Endurace.
*Taking a Walk will decrease Psychological Stats -
Discernment and Receptivity* << But don’t worry, those are already at lowest level, Poor.
Dont forget Kamp Kweh.

(Day 19 – Day 28)
Keep feeding with Vomp Carrots. Should add Azouph Greens too, to maintain high affection level.
Change Care Schedule to “Carry Packages,”
boosting Strength and Endurace even more.
*Carrying Packages will also decrease Discernment and Receptivity*
*Carrying Packages will decrease Affection faster than Taking a Walk in Town*
Dont forget Kamp Kweh.

(Day 29 – Day 64)
Feed Vomp Carrots and Azoup Greens on regular basis.

Keep on doing the Carry Packages” Care Plan, but….
If you want a big, big boost on Strength (for speed), while not caring about getting any Endurance, use “Deliver Messages.”
*Delivering Messages will decrease Receptivity*
*Delivering Messages will decrease Affection much faster than Carrying Packages*
*There’s no Care Plan that can big boost Endurance alone*

Before starting this method, you should boost the Strength a great deal for speed, and for future decrease.
*With very high level of Strength, you can still win races easily even with lowered Endurance*

Still feed Azouph Greens for affection.
– Either keep feeding
Vomp Carrots to compensate with the opposite Care Plan or
– Change feed to Zegham Carrots to help boost Psylogical Attributes.

Change Care Plan to start boosting Brain Stats instead….
– Either use “Exhibit to Public” to increase both
Discernment and Receptivity, but this will lower both Strength and Endurance.
- Or use “Dig for Treasure” to big boost only Discernment, while sacrificing with the loss of Endurance.
*Exhibiting to Public will decrease Affection as fast as Carrying Packages*
*Digging for Treasure will decrease Affection as fast as Delivering Messages*

Watch for your Stats, should not let your main stats drop too much, or your chocobo will become the jack of all trades who’s good at none.

Use “Raise Attribute” option, by spending 80 Chocobucks at a Chocobo Racing Authority to upgrade any stat that you want.
Either repair your Body stats, or help upgrading Brain stats.
* Will require about 7 upgrades to fully raise the attribute 1 level, i.e. from A Bit Deficient to Average*

Read your chocobo the story for Gallop, and Canter. Auto-Regen might be good too, but I honestly have no idea.
*They said that even when you fail to teach the ability, reading stories to your chocobo can help increase Discernment a little*
*You can only teach 2 skills to one chocobo*

*Keep racing and digging for Chocobucks everyday*
Dont forget Kamp Kweh.

(Alternate methods don’t have to start right on day 29, you can start it when you feel like, or when you think you get enough stats of your desire and want to change method.)
(Day 29 – Day 64) Alternate Method 2
If you  don’t want to sacrifice any of the Physical Attributes….
Change Care Plan to Basic Care to preserve
Strength and Endurance while increase Discernment (and Receptivity) for small amount each day.

Still feed Azouph Greens for affection.
– Either feed
Zegham Carrots to help increase in Psylogocal Stats or….
– Change feed to Vomp Carrots to help boost Physical Stats.

Once its Discernment reaches A Bit Deficient, start reading your chocobo the story for Gallop, and then when get Average, start teaching Canter.
*They said that even when you fail to teach the ability, reading stories to your chocobo can help increase Discernment a little*
*You can only teach 2 skills to one chocobo*

Use “Raise Attribute” option, by spending 80 Chocobucks at a Chocobo Racing Authority to upgrade only Discernment, to help speeding up the increase of chance in learning.
* Will require about 7 upgrades to fully raise the attribute 1 level, i.e. from A Bit Deficient to Average*

*Keep racing and digging for Chocobucks everyday*
Dont forget Kamp Kweh.

(After Day 64)
Same here, to save money, you can change feed to San d’Orian Carrots from now on.
Keep the Azouph Greens on the menu if you wish.

Since Care Plan on Schedule won’t help any stat anymore, change it to Basic Care, permanently.

Keep racing, digging, and upgrading attributes of your choice.
Max out your Physical stats like Strength and Endurance, and/or increase Discernment for the ease of skill-teaching.
Keep reading the stories of your choice if your chocobo hasn’t learnt the skill.

Dont forget Kamp Kweh. Your chocobo can still get bonus in stats from this activity after Day 64.

My Brother’s Chocobo, ChocolatCiel, is now on Day 89.
He has neglected his baby every once in a while, skipping the check, the feed, as well as Direct Care for 1 day for a few times.
Occasionally, he forgot to register Care Plan Schedule, so the Stables Person put his Chocobo on Basic Care, hindering the boost in stats for one or a few days each time.
I’ve raced his chocobo with moderate effort, upgrading his Discernment for several times.
I’ve tried to dig for treasure and Chocobucks with this chocobo a few times.
I’ve tried to do Kamp Kweh as often as I could, gaining more Intelligence (which I believe is Discernment) on several occasions.
Now his attributes are as follow;

Strength: First-Class (lv 8.)
Endurance:
First-Class (lv 8.)
Discernment: A Bit Deficient (lv 3)
Receptivity: Poor (lv 1)

Abilities : Gallop (Have just learned on Day 89!!!)

>>> Then on Day 96, at Average Discernment, he finally learned skill Canter!

—————————————————————————————-

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Finally done with writing these entries!

Took me the whole day to do this, and I was absorbed in the writing that I even forgot to have dinner muwahahahaha!!!

Well, I hope this helps. Enjoy raising your chocobo!

Well, today at Chocobo Stables in Bastok, I ran into Pitlordd again. So we did Kamp Kweh (with my bro Brunestud too) and talked a little. His chocobo seems to have a very difficult trying to win the Novice Official Race II. So, he’s considering getting a new Chocobo. I feel like writing some basic information of Chocobo Raising for my future reference, and just in case someone would need it.

Apart from picking a suitable Honeymoon Plan in order to derive the correct stat we want, as well as the correct type of ability (racer type/digger type) from correct side of parent, we will need to take a good care of the Egg, then the Chick, the Teenage Chocobo, and eventually the matured Chocobo, through out its life in the stables.

What we need :

Time. Absolutely. One hour a day or even just half an hour will do.

Chocobo’s Food. You need to pick suitable food to raise the correct stats for your chocobo.

Some money. Sometimes food and medication for chocobo requires quite an amount of money (gil).

Patience. It will take a long time before your effort yield fruits.

Research. Read a lot. But don’t believe everything. Just use other people’s strategy as a rough guideline.

Creativity. Compile information you’ve gathered, and think of the best combination to make your chocobo as good as you can. Make it suit your lifestyle as well, you can’t do exactly the same as other owner, especially if your time doesn’t allow.

—————————————————————————————-

Where to research?

Well, I read various webpages before I started raising my chocobo. As well as asking various people who had experienced in that before.

Gah!! The other page that I’ve been using to check how food influences affection is currently blocked by security systen because it seemed to be infected with malicious code or something.

—————————————————————————————-

First step: Egg Stage (Day 0 – Day 3)

As an Egg, your chocobo won’t lose any energy when you take care of it. And the only option under “Direct Care” menu is “Watch Over.” So, during the first 4 days from Day 0 to Day 4, spam “Watch Over” as much as you can. You don’t have to exit from the main menu and re-talk to the Stables Person for every “Watch.” Just select “Care for your Chocobo” from main menu, then spam “Watch Over” and “Yes,” “Watch Over” and “Yes” until you reach the number you want. I had done that to my chocobo’s egg about 40-50 times a day.

Why spam “Watch Over”?

Watch Over helps increase affection. If you manage to watch over it for 150 times or so, your egg, or chick, will have about Maximum Affection level towards you. Having max love from start will allow you to concentrate your daily chocobo care to raise its stats instead of affection. And since affection decays over time, having max affection at start will give you plenty of love to hang on.

Spamming “Watch Over” is a method that is great for every type of chocobos.

—————————————————————————————-

Second Step: Chick Stage (Day 4 – Day 18)

On the 4th day, after listening to the report from Stables Person, your chick will hatch from the egg. Now you can feed your chick (be trading food to the Stables Person) and can order Care Plan for the caretaker to do for you. You can also do “Direct Care” for each day.

Feed
Watch for the report to see how hungry your chick is. Usually you can feed it with 1 or 2 pieces of food, like 2 carrots, per day. The energy bar (similar to your own HP bar) will determine how hungry the chocobo will become tomorrow. For example, if to day you only use “Direct Care” activities to spend half of the bar, it is very likely that your chick will become just “a little hungry” instead of “starving” like when you deplete its energy to zero. It is good to use up all the energy, because then the next day you can feed it  carrots instead of 1.

Mind you though, do not over-feed your chocobo. Once the Stables Person says that it’s “Completely Full,” stop feeding. In order to avoid over-feeding without realizing it, you should feed (trade) your food one by one.

Care Plan
Not many care plans to choose from when it’s a chick.

Care Plan plays the most significant role of how your chocobo stats will develop. Check wiki guide for how each Care Plan influences stats.

To order a care plan, you must select “Set Up A Care Schedule.” Then it will show “Next Program” which indicates what was registered yesterday. From birth, your chick will be automatically under “Basic Care” Care Plan. If you change the plan today, tomorrow it will still be under “Basic Care.” Must wait until the day after tomorrow to see the “Current Care Plan” (when Stables Person report to you each day) changing into what you had newly registered.

Direct Care
Direct Care is a tool to maintain affection level. Some, however, will help in increasing specific stats. I usually take my chick to a Short Walk 2-3 times a day. Then if the bar still has enough energy left, I would “Watch Over.

Taking your chick or chocobo to a walk will eventually earn you the Key Item for “Tell A Story” direct care, which will be available once the chick grows up to teenager (adolescence).

While on the walk, your baby might find small treasure on the ground. When that happens, if you “Watch Over” your chocobo, the Stables Person will tell you to keep that treasure. Usually from Short Walk, my chick would find various kinds of grass, like Tokopekko which I kept for later use, feeding this medical grass to it on the day it got sick.

Crying At Night
On around day 8, the Stables Person will tell you your chick has been crying loud enough to wake the deads at night. It’s having a nightmare. The Stables Person will then suggest you keep a hankerchief with you for a while (like 1 real life hour) and then return it to him/her. Doing that will cure your chocobo from “Having Nightmares” status. The hankerchief will play an important role later on, too!

—————————————————————————————-

Third Step: Teenager Stage (Day 19 – Day 28)

Your chick will grows up and now you can notice if it is going to be of any special colour.

Daily care for your chococo will be similar to when it’s still a tiny chick, but you get more options.

Feed
Now if you keep making your chocobo starving by using up all the energy, and feed in a correct sequence, you should be able to feed your chocobo with 3 pieces of food each day. I would suggest 2 Carrots (or the correct type) and then 1 clump of Azouph Greens. I would also suggest feeding it one by one to avoid over-feeding. Use this sequence, Carrot => Carrot => Greens. Because if you go Carrot => Green, the chocobo will become “Completely Full” and you can’t feed the 2nd carrot of the day.

Azough Green is the green that gives the highest affection points. It is about equal to affection gained from taking chocobo to a long walk in Direct Care option.

Carrots will raise stats a tiny bit, but you must pick the correct kind of carrots.

When your Chocobo has abnormal condition like a cold, or an unjury, you will need special kind of feed to cure it. The Stables Person will tell you what kind of feed (grass, greens) you need. If you miss the message or the message glitches, just go to main chocobo menu and “Ask for your chocobo condition.”

When that happens, you must choose whether you would sacrifice tiny amount of stat boost from 1 Carrot or to sacrifice the affection from Azouph Greens. Because after feeding the chocobo a medical green or grass, although your chocobo will still appear to be starving, it will only take 2 more feeds. So, you can choose Medicine + 2 Carrots, or Medicine + 1 Carrot + 1 Azouph.

Care Plan
You now have more options to pick from. Plan it and register it wisely in order to make the most of it to boost your chocobo’s wanted stats.

Direct Care
Now you can take your chocobo to Regular Walk. On your first Regular Walk, you will meet with 3 guys who’re raising a black Chocobo named Best. After that encounter, you will find a new “Direct Care.” The “Compete Against Other” will eventually earn you one of the Key Item needed for telling a story.

Telling A Story – is a direct care which allows you to teach abilities (traits, or passive skills) to your chocobo. The stories can be obtained through various method. Your chocobo, however, is very less likely to learn any ability from any story at this age. Most stories require higher level of Discernment (intelligence) to be learnt.

—————————————————————————————-

Fourth Step: Adult Stage (Day 29 – Day 64)

Yet even more options in taking care of your chocobo. And more problems!

Oh, and from now on your chocobo will be big like other grown-up chocobos. Also, the coloured tail tips during adolescence will now become full-colour all over the body.

Feed
You still feed it the same way as previous stage.

However, occasionally your chocobo might have a new sickness called “Lovesick.” Generally the Stables Person will say it has his head in the cloud, refusing to do anything etc. This can be cured with Celerity Salad. Celerity Salad can be obtained through high level Cooking or Chocobo Hot And Cold Game.

Care Plan
You have yet more options in Care Plan or Schedule. Beware, though. Since the new plans will decrease affection significantly. So you must be careful not to skip a day in Direct Care. Failing to take care of your chocobo 1 or 2 days may result in a dramatic drop in affection level.

Direct Care
Now you can take your grown-up chocobo to a Long Walk. 1 Long Walk a day combined with 1 Azouph Greens should be able to maintain high level of affection with no trouble.

Obtaining Chocobo Whistle
Once your chocobo becomes adult, you’ll be able to activate a quest to obtain whistle. Go to San d’Oria stables and talk to Hentalion. He will tell you to try to find something that your Chocobo has been hiding. Then, each day you must take it to a walk in various length (short, regular, and long) in order to sneak a peek and steal what your Chocobo had hidden!

A few tips on this….

When on a walk, it will have new kind of message. Sometimes it will say “Your chocobo looks very happy.” When I got that message and tried to check for item, the chocobo always found out and my search would always fail. Later, when it says “Your chocobo seems totally absorbed in its activities” or something like that, my search would succeed. But then again, if the place isn’t the correct place, you would find nothing. Just move to other type of walk and keep doing this until you find THE THING!

Chocobo Racing
At this age, your chocobo can participate in a Race. You need to register with the nation’s team in order to be able to race at that nation’s Race Circuit. You just have to ask for a documentation from the Stables Person, and get a Racing Form. Then trade the racing form to Racing Authority. Then you’re all set!

When you want to race, however, do not enter the door. You only need to talk to the Race Authoroty in front of the Circuit door. (The same one you trade the Racing Form.)

If you specialized your chocobo as a racer, you can win high ranked Official Races and earn yourself some dandy trophies to put as furnitures on your Mog House. If you specialized your chocobo as a digger, you can, at least, win 3 Novice ranked Official Races and then move to Free Run (will only appear in the race menu after winning 3 Novice Races) to earn Chocobucks.

Chocobucks plays a very important role in upgrading your Chocobo’s stats past day 64.

Chocobo Hot And Cold Game
Upon obtaining your Chocobo Whistle, and then register a chocobo of your choice to respond to it, you can participate in Chocobo Hot And Cold Game, which involve digging. Each day, resetting at Japanese midnight, you can obtain 1 item for free. That grass will be what you use to call your chocobo to the digging field. After activate the participation, you’ll be able to dig in 2 places. Konschtat Highlands, and Tahrongi Canyon. Each will lead to a different path of digging license. Pick one. No, actually you can pick both. Just do one at a time.

More details can be found here >> http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/The_Chocobo_Hot_and_Cold_Game

What’s so good about it?

If you dig successfully, you’ll get a ticket to trade for free Chocobucks. So everyday you can earn 1, 3, or 5 Chocobucks from digging in Hot And Cold Game. It depends on how advanced the place you dig is. Places like Altep areas and Jungles (Yhoat, Yuhtunga) will earn you 5! But of course, it’s much harder to dig than beginner areas which yield only 1 Chocobuck.

You can also obtain free junks, some of which are of high value on Auction House, or even at NPC shops.

Your Chocobo Digging skill will also rise after enough successfully digs in this game.

—————————————————————————————-

Fifth Step: Halt in Growth (Day 64 and so on)

After Day 64, your chocobo will reportedly reach its limit of growth. Food and Care Plan will no longer increase any stats (except affection.)

So, if your Chocobo still hasn’t reached the level of stats (Strength, Endurance, Discernment, and Receptivity) that you desire, you will have to work hard, very hard, to obtain Chocobucks in order to buy Attribute Upgrades from the other Racing Authority.

—————————————————————————————-

Sixth Step: Retirement

A retirement can be requested by you at any time after your chocobo reaches adulthood. But DO NOT do that before you obtain Chocobo Whistle, otherwise you will never be able to get it except by raising a new chocobo! Also, if you want to increase any of the attributes, you should not retire it. Keep your chocobo in the stables. Because even though you can buy “R. Chocotrain Token” to upgrade your selected attribute on your retired chocobo, it costs 90 Chocobucks instead of 80 like when you order a direct upgrade on your current chocobo.

Gahhhh I hope that covers all of the general things to know about Chocobo Raising!

Heh! Well, since I’ve been babysitting my brother’s chocobo, I’ve noticed a few BIG differences in appearance between my red chocobo and his black chocobo.
Really, they look obviously different that you could tell at just a glance.

ArashiZetsuei (red) is a Digger Chocobo. She currently has First-Class discernment.
ChocolatCiel (black) is a Runner Chocobo, currently First-Class in both Strength and Endurance.

Of course we can see the beaks….that really stand out in contrast.
Arashi has got a pair of beaks that look as if they can slam through a Galka’s skull >.>
And the feathers on the head also look bigger, thicker, and longer.

Well, both of them have large eyes (I’ve seen other chocobo with noticably narrower eyes) but ChocolatCiel’s eyes seem a bit rounder?

Next, the legs and feet. I can’t see any difference here except for the skin pattern. The size looks identical, right?

Then, the butts, oops, I meant the tails!

Look! His chocobo has more tailfeathers then than mine!

Let’s see these tails closer…. in a better angle.

ChocolatCiel has 3 layers of tailfeathers while ArashiZetsuei has only 1! Not counting the short layer extending from the back towards tail though.

This is fun XD I wish SE had made chocobo’s appearance more various than this, and I’d like a purple (I mean real purple, not bluish) chocobo!
